How to Use Trezor with Monero (XMR)

Learn how to combine the security of Trezor hardware wallets with the functionality of the official Monero GUI for ultimate privacy.

Device Compatibility & Requirements

Trezor Suite does not natively manage XMR.

To manage Monero with a Trezor device, you must use a third-party interface like the Monero GUI or Monero CLI. Your private keys remain safely on the Trezor device.

Supported Models: Trezor Model T, Trezor Safe 3, Trezor Safe 5.
(The older Trezor Model One does not support Monero directly).

Setup Instructions

1 Step 1: Update Firmware

Before connecting to third-party wallets, ensure your device is up to date.

  1. Connect your device to your computer.
  2. Open Trezor Suite.
  3. Go to Settings -> Device and update to the latest firmware version.
  4. Once updated, keep the device connected but you can close Trezor Suite.

2 Step 2: Install Monero GUI

Get the Wallet Software

1. Visit the official download page: getmonero.org.
2. Download the GUI Wallet for your operating system.
3. Install the application.

3 Step 3: Connect Trezor to Monero GUI

Initialize the wallet using your hardware device credentials.

  1. Launch Monero GUI. Select "Create a new wallet from hardware".
  2. Select "Trezor" from the device list.
  3. Passphrase: If you use a passphrase on your Trezor, you will be asked to enter it on the device or computer (depending on the model).
  4. Export View Key: Confirm the export on your Trezor touchscreen. This allows the wallet to scan for your funds.
  5. Select "Simple Mode" (uses remote nodes) or "Advanced" (downloads blockchain). Simple mode is recommended for beginners.

4 Step 4: Managing Funds

Your Trezor is now the "Key" to this wallet.

  • Receiving XMR: Use the "Receive" tab in the GUI. The address belongs to your Trezor. You can verify it on the device screen by clicking "Show on Device".
  • Sending XMR: When sending funds, you must have the Trezor connected.
  • Confirmation: All transactions must be physically confirmed on the Trezor touchscreen. This prevents hackers from stealing funds even if your PC is compromised.
