How to Use Ledger with Monero (XMR)

The ultimate guide to cold storage. Learn how to bridge your Ledger hardware device with the Monero GUI for maximum security.

Important: Read Before Starting

Ledger Live does not support Monero accounts natively.

While you can install the Monero app via Ledger Live, you cannot "add an account" or view your XMR balance inside the Ledger Live interface. instead, you must use your Ledger device as a key to unlock the Monero GUI Wallet (official software). Your funds remain offline on the device, but the GUI is used to view and spend them.

Setup Instructions

1 Step 1: Install Monero App on Ledger

First, we need to teach your hardware device how to speak the Monero language.

  1. Open Ledger Live on your computer.
  2. Connect your Ledger Nano S, S Plus, or X and unlock it.
  3. Go to My Ledger and search for "Monero" in the App Catalog.
  4. Click Install. Once finished, CLOSE LEDGER LIVE. It will conflict with the wallet software if left open.

2 Step 2: Download Monero GUI

Get the Official Wallet

1. Go to the official website: getmonero.org/downloads.
2. Download the GUI Wallet for your OS (Windows, Mac, Linux).
3. Install and launch the application.

3 Step 3: Connect Hardware Wallet

This is the critical step where you link the physical key to the software.

  1. Open the Monero app on your physical Ledger device. It should say "Monero is Ready".
  2. In the Monero GUI on your PC, select "Create a new wallet from hardware".
  3. Select "Ledger" from the dropdown menu.
  4. View Key Export: Your Ledger will ask to export the private view key.
Accepting (Recommended for beginners): Much faster syncing. PC knows your transaction history.
Rejecting: Maximum privacy, but scanning for funds is very slow.
  5. Choose "Simple Mode (Bootstrap)" for the easiest experience that balances speed and security.

4 Step 4: Sending & Receiving

Your wallet is now ready. Here is how transactions work:

  • Receiving: Click the "Receive" tab in the GUI. You can copy this address to send funds to your Ledger. You do not need the device connected to receive.
  • Sending: Click the "Send" tab. Enter details and click "Send".
  • Signing: The GUI will ask you to confirm on your device. Look at your Ledger screen. Verify the amount and address, then press both buttons to "Accept TX".
