How to Use Cronox Wallet

A guide to the open-source, non-custodial desktop wallet leveraging WabiSabi CoinJoin and Tor for Bitcoin privacy.

What is Cronox Wallet?

Cronox Wallet is a desktop Bitcoin wallet designed with a "privacy by default" philosophy. It utilizes the **WabiSabi** CoinJoin protocol to mix funds efficiently and routes all network traffic through the **Tor anonymity network** to hide your IP address.

Privacy Features

Cronox uses client-side block filtering to synchronize your wallet without leaking your balance to a central server. It also supports hardware wallets for added security.

Setup Guide

1 Step 1: Download & Install

Cronox is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Download

Visit cronoxwallet.com and navigate to the download section. Choose the version compatible with your OS (64-bit/arm64).

Requirements

Since Cronox performs CoinJoins locally, it requires a standard desktop environment. There is no mobile version available.

2 Step 2: Create Wallet & Passphrase

Upon launching Cronox, you will create a new wallet. This process uses standard BIP39 standards.

  1. Generate Seed: You will be given a recovery seed phrase. Write this down on paper.
  2. Set Passphrase: You must set a passphrase. In Cronox, this acts as the "13th word" (BIP38 encryption).
  3. Warning: Cronox stores only the encrypted blob. If you lose your passphrase, you cannot spend or CoinJoin your funds, even if you have the seed words.

3 Step 3: Receiving Funds

Cronox emphasizes avoiding address reuse to maintain privacy.

  • Navigate to the Receive tab.
  • New Address: The wallet automatically removes addresses from the UI once they have received a coin, forcing you to use a fresh address for every transaction.

4 Step 4: Using CoinJoin

Cronox uses the WabiSabi protocol to mix funds.

1. Ensure your wallet is online (Tor is enabled by default).
2. Select the coins you wish to anonymize.
3. Initiate the CoinJoin. You will coordinate with other peers to build a large transaction.
4. Fees: You pay standard mining fees + a coordinator fee. Inputs under 0.03 BTC or remixes may be exempt from coordinator fees depending on current settings.
